brewer’s block

pittsburgh, PA

OVERVIEW

Brewer’s Block is located at the convergence of three historic Pittsburgh neighborhoods, fitting within the Strip District and Lawrenceville’s visual character while serving as the gateway to Polish Hill. The design is intended to create a “town square” atmosphere, with the streetscape acting as a woonerf (living street) designed to be pedestrian-dominated with flush curbs and strategically placed parking, crosswalks, plantings, lighting, and site furnishings. The courtyards were placed to promote socializing among the residents and include recreational features. One of the courtyards features passive recreation such as seating, intimate gathering spaces, and fire pits, while the other was designed for active recreation with open space for programmable events and games. Both courtyards aid in the management of stormwater from the surrounding development.
