broad street plaza

pittsburgh, PA

Overview

Klavon designed the site and landscape for the Hotel Indigo development in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh in 2013. Fast forward to 2019, Klavon was sought to develop a parcel of land located next to the hotel, across Broad Street, into a public plaza. The Kirkwood Building shops are located adjacent to the plaza on the opposite side. After meetings with key stakeholders, and several community meetings, the overarching goal of the plaza was to determined - to design the plaza to blend the shops, hotel, streetscape, and open space into a safe cohesive urban space.

The existing plaza is outdated, floods, lacks lighting and site amenities, and therefore has become a nuisance the East Liberty community. The proposed design ‘Juxtaposition’ gets its roots from Pittsburgh’s history, while looking ahead to the future with more contemporary site elements. Incorporating design queues from other areas in East Liberty, and materials from the hotel, help the plaza to fit seamlessly into the area.

By opening up the plaza, adding lighting, providing a variety of places to sit, bike racks, and new plantings the plaza will aid in attracting new businesses to the Kirkland shops, provide a flexible space for East Liberty to hold a variety of activities such as civic events, performances from the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, the farmers market, events such as a food truck round-up, a nice setting for the hotel, and a nice place to stop and enjoy your lunch. Activating the space will help to prevent crime.
