energy innovation center

pittsburgh, PA

Overview

The mission of the Energy Innovation Center (EIC) is to contribute to socially responsible workforce development, foster energy and sustainable technology advancement, and assist in job creation through a commitment to diversity, innovation, and comprehensive education. This 6.6-acre urban complex is located in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, a neighborhood that has been through years of economic challenges. The EIC acts as a catalyst for the local economy and is one of the first major efforts to reconnect the Hill District with Downtown. The building sits on a very prominent site that contributes to the Pittsburgh skyline and is a statement about Pittsburgh’s commitment to sustainability.

This LEED Platinum project features a sustainable landscape, focused on fostering the local urban ecosystem. Stormwater from the parking lot infiltrates into pervious parking stalls and collects in bioretention cells, which are planted with native vegetation. Critical native species are labeled with signage to help educate the public on the importance of local flora.
