heinz chapel garden

university of pittsburgh | Pittsburgh, PA

Overview

The Alumni Association desired to include a garden next to Heinz Chapel for events, meetings with potential donors, and to offer a place for visitors and students to sit and relax. The garden design is inspired by parterre gardens of Europe. The design is simple, classic, and understated to showcase, rather than compete with, the iconic chapel. The formal garden consists of clipped boxwood hedges in a symmetrical pattern, surrounding flowering hydrangea beds, custom stone benches throughout the garden, and sandstone pathways radiating from a central fountain, which is the garden’s focal point. Klavon created digital renderings of the gardens for the Alumni Association to use in marketing to potential donors. Tasks included schematic design, design development, bidding and negotiations, construction documents, and construction administration
