Caisson Platoon Facility Area Development Plan and Environmental Assessment

Fort Belvoir, VA

OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

The Caisson Platoon Facility Area Development Plan (ADP) was developed to identify and address several facility deficiencies at the Caisson Platoon’s training facility at Ft. Belvoir. The vision for the project was to plan a world-class riding facility to support the Platoon’s critical mission of honoring deceased Servicemen and women by carrying them to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.

The preferred alternative was carefully developed along with The Old Guard (TOG) and Ft. Belvoir to integrate sustainable design and limit impact to archaeological sites and ecological areas including the Accotink Bay Wildlife Preservation Area.

The Caisson Platoon is also responsible for training Army Horsemen. The Platoon is currently unable to train new Horsemen in the winter, so the ADP proposed a new indoor riding arena with a classroom, vet room, office, kitchen, tack room, restrooms, lockers, and workshop to allow the year-round training of Army Horsemen.
