University of Pittsburgh – Frick Courtyard

The Frick Fine Arts Building, home of the University of Pittsburgh’s History of Art and Architecture Department and Studio Arts Department, Library is ranked among the top 10 fine arts libraries in the United States. The building’s Italian Renaissance architecture, complete with a cloister-style inner courtyard, makes it truly unique in Pittsburgh. Klavon was commissioned to redesign the courtyard in the flavor of Italian architecture and gardening. Klavon Design Associates, Inc. with Barry Hannegan (historian) designed a formal courtyard around an existing water feature in the center of the square. The courtyard includes typical components of an Italian garden such as boxwood hedges, topiary boxwood accents, big blue lilyturf, snowdrop crocus, and a gravel floor.
