One of the most heavily visited buildings on The University of Pittsburgh campus, Alumni Hall, required a landscape that was able to enhance, as well as stand its own against, the very formal building. Along the front of the building, a row of hornbeams reflect the rhythm of the architecture with their upright, strong stature. Boxwood, shrub roses, and English Ivy are planted at the base of the trees to create a more formal, traditional landscape. Along the sides of the building, the landscape softens through the use of sweet-smelling magnolias and big blue lilyturf. Still formal in design, the plants used create an enjoyable experience for the many students, faculty, and alumni who pass by.
