warner hall

Carnegie mellon university | Pittsburgh, PA

Overview

To visitors and prospective students, Warner Hall is often their first impression with it being the main administration building on campus. Unfortunately, the condition of the crumbling rooftop plaza on top of Warner Hall’s roof was allowing water to seep into the offices below. The roof repair required the complete removal of the old plaza, and Klavon was awarded the opportunity to redesign the space. The new rooftop plaza wraps around all four sides of the Hall, with each side treated as a room with varying conditions of solar exposure, connectivity, views, circulation, and programming. The design also complements the architecture of the building through its materials. The new rooftop landscape provides year-round color and interest, minimizes the amount of heat absorbed by the plaza, and uses the planting beds for bioretention.
