Fern Hollow Bridge Restoration
Frick Park | pittsburgh, PA
Overview
The Fern Hollow Bridge connects the neighborhoods of Squirrel Hill North and Regent Square on the East End of Pittsburgh, providing a crucial connection for commuters and emergency responders alike. In January of 2022 the bridge collapsed into a large ravine within Frick Park, severing this crucial connection. PennDOT coordinated with the City of Pittsburgh and the design team to fast-track the project to allow the bridge to be functioning within the year.
Klavon was tasked with providing site restoration plans for the area underneath the bridge within Frick Park. Klavon worked to restore the area under the bridge to its original state, incorporating a native plant palette that included seed mixes, perennials, shrubs, and trees into the design. Tranquil Trail, which runs directly underneath the bridge adjacent to Fern Hollow Creek, was restored in-kind and now includes public art (designed by Carin Mincemoyer) which provides seating for the public and emanates natural boulders and logs.
Klavon’s proposed reforestation plan required careful coordination to ensure that the plant selection compliments the site and allows proper stormwater management, circulation, and emergency access. Plant selection was crucial to this project, with the City of Pittsburgh, PennDOT, and Upstream PGH all providing input into the final plant list.
