Overview
The St. James Parish campus occupies a 4.3 acre site, nestled in the Borough of Sewickley. The main area of the campus houses a church, rectory, accessory garage, gathering space, school, multipurpose area, unoccupied convent building, and parking. There is also a residential home, which is used as a rental property, and an overflow parking area adjacent to the main property.
Klavon provided a master plan that addressed vehicular issues including parking demands and undesirable vehicular cut-throughs of the campus, both of which were straining positive relationships with parish neighbors. The master plan also addressed the demands of the campus’ multiple users and different groups that have have pushed the campus to its physical limits. While interior space is sufficient, quality outdoor space was inadequate.
The master plan improved overall connectivity through the campus by reorienting vehicular circulation, parking, and improved signage. Outdoor spaces for the school children were provided by incorporating a variety of safe play areas and play equipment for all age groups.
Several outdoor gathering areas for parishioners and guests were also provided. Smaller more quaint spaces were incorporated for one to eat their lunch outside, sit and enjoy the day, or wander in the prayer garden. A larger gated reflection garden was proposed on the site of the vacant convent building and designed in a manner that would not only allow for use by the parish, but also provide an inviting space for the community to share.
